Episode 11: Vegan Hot Dogs


  • 1 package firm tofu
  • 5 tbsp almond meal
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 cups wheat gluten
Special Equipment:
  • Steamer
  • Parchment paper
  • Crumble 1 package of firm tofu into a food processor
  • Add the almond meal, chili powder, paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, soy sauce, and cornstarch
  • Process until you have a smooth mixture
  • Transfer the mixture to a large bowl
  • Add the wheat gluten and mix well
  • Knead the mixture
  • Break off a piece of the mixture and roll it into a hot dog shape
  • Put the hot dog onto a sheet of parchment paper and roll it up
  • Put the parchment-wrapped hot dog onto a sheet of aluminum foil and roll it up
  • Twist the ends of the foil together like a tootsie roll
  • Steam the hot dogs in a steamer for 45 minutes
  • Remove from the steamer and completely unwrap the hot dogs
  • Grill the hot dogs or alternatively, fry the hot dogs in some vegetable oil
  • Serve on a hot dog bun with your favorite condiments
