Episode 96: Vegan Fried Chicken

Original recipe from Mary’s Test Kitchen

Ingredients:

  • 1 block medium firm tofu
  • 1/3 cup pickle brine
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast flakes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

Directions:

  • Put a package of medium firm tofu in the freezer overnight
  • Take the tofu out of the freezer and put in the refrigerator to thaw
  • When the tofu has completely thawed out, put in the freezer again
  • Take the tofu out of the freezer and put in the refrigerator to thaw
  • When tofu has thawed, take out of package
  • Press the tofu for 30 minutes
  • Shred the tofu into chunks
  • Bake the tofu at 425 degrees for 10-15 minutes
  • Add the pickle brine to a bowl
  • Add the brown sugar, nutritional yeast flakes, garlic powder, cayenne pepper, black pepper, kosher salt
  • Mix well
  • Take the tofu out of the oven
  • Dredge the tofu pieces in the marinade
  • Bake the tofu at 350 degrees for 10 minutes
  • Serve hot
